Canterbury is a suburb in the City of Canterbury in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The postcode is 2193. Canterbury has a mixture of residential and commercial development, the latter situated on or near Canterbury Road. Extensive parkland may be found on the banks of the Cooks River. Canterbury Park Racecourse features a 1,578 metre track and attracts thousands to its horse racing carnivals. Canterbury is approximately 10 kilometres south-west of Sydney's central business district. To the north is the suburb of Ashbury, to the west is Campsie, to the south is Earlwood, and to the east is Hurlstone Park. Indigenous Australians lived in this area for thousand of years. In 1770, the land along the Cooks River was explored by officers from the HM Bark Endeavour.
